OV-Watch is mentioned in the PREPARING FOR PREGNANCY section of the multimillion copy bestselling, doctor authored
pregnancy book,
"Your Pregnancy Week by Week"
by Glade B. Curtis, M.D., OB/GYN and Judith Schuler, M.S.

On page 20, the following paragraph can be found,
"OV-Watch is a device you wear on your wrist, like a watch, to help you determine when you're most fertile. The device measures the concentration of chloride on your skin-chloride surge can be an indicator of increased fertility. The instrument processes the information to determine your fertility status. When you read the OV-Watch, it tells you whether you are fertile (preovulation), ovulating, less fertile (after ovulation) or not fertile. This toll is lightweight and is worn at night. When you wake up in the morning, you read the results. If you're interested, ask your doctor about it."

Ask Dr. Bates

I am interested in learning more about the OV-Watch, specifically in how closely in pinpoints ovulation time. While I appreciate the uniqueness of the OV Watch in predicting the four most fertile days, that aspect of your product is irrelevant for me, as my wife and I must use thawed frozen donor sperm via IUI to conceive. We are worried that our current methods of ovulation prediction (OPKs, and the Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor) will prove inaccurate next month when she begins a round of clomiphene citrate and are seeking an alternative. Please send me information about how and how accurately your product predicts ovulation time, and what sort of a timeframe it provides (i.e., ovulation will occur within 24 hours, 12 hours, 4 hours, etc.), especially any relevant citations to scientific studies, or FDA trials information.

Aaron,

Thank you for your email. I appreciate your concerns and desire to accurately time the IUI. Ovulation detection methods that rely on the urine LH surge definitely have the potential to miss ovulation or detect it sufficiently late to hinder the chances of pregnancy. Dr. Vivian Lewis and her colleagues from Rochester, NY reported that more than 1 in 5 women on clomiphene citrate will miss ovulation with tradition LH testing. Conversely, researchers at Emory University recently presented data that the OV-Watch was more sensitive than LH testing in detecting ovulation after clomiphene in a group of women who were challenging to monitor response to treatment. In your case, I would argue that the advance notice of approaching ovulation with the OV-Watch is important. Sperm is viable in the female reproductive tract for several days, yet the egg has a very limited lifespan. Therefore, IUI before ovulation is the key and determining the exact time of ovulation is not crucial. I recommend that couples using the OV-Watch have their IUI on Fertile Day 4 to guarantee advance exposure to the sperm. (The watch reads Fertile Day 1,2,3,4 and day of ovulation) Some specialist perform 2 IUIs with frozen or donor sperm. In that case, day 4 and day of ovulation would be reasonable. To be complete I should mention that the gold standard for monitoring response to fertility medication is blood work (estradiol, LH prospectively and progesterone afterwards) with an ultrasound to measure follicle growth. Many also use an injection of the pregnancy hormone, HCG, to precisely time the IUI. If one wishes to avoid the time/expense of multiple visits to a fertility specialist with ultrasounds, the OV-Watch provides accurate, ADVANCED notice.

Best of luck with your treatments.

Dr. Bates
