OV-Watch and Clomid

Clinical Efficacy of the OV-Watch®  Fertility Predictor in Ovulation Induction with Clomiphene Citrate (clomid)

John K Park, MD, Metrecia L Terrell, MSPH, & Celia E Dominguez, MD Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA,  Emory University School of Public Health, Atlanta, Ga.

Study Design:  Prospective cohort study consisting of infertile women with cycles >35 days or anovulation (no cycles for 6 months) being treated with clomid (dose of clomid ranged from 50mg to 200mg, with the most common dose being 50mg). 79% treated population had PCOS, 71% were on metformin, 100% were taking clomid (avg. dose 50mg)

Conclusion: Although the LH test and the OV-Watch™ have equal accuracy at predicting ovulation, the OV-Watch™ is significantly more sensitive in detecting ovulation than LH testing when the patient is on clomid.

The clinical trials for our FDA 510K medical device clearance, conducted at Duke University and Thomas Jefferson in Philadelphia, compared OV-Watch to the LH urine kits (since that was the only predicate device). The trial results concluded that the OV-Watch is equivalent in predicting ovulation; however, it also went beyond to "provide the user with notice up to four days before ovulation during which the user may have the greatest chance of becoming pregnant". That is why the cumulative conception rate is almost double with OV-Watch. To put it simply, 66% more pregnancies are estimated to occur by month 6 with OV-Watch over LH kits

September's Q &A

Dr. Bates,

My husband is on medication for high blood pressure and mild diabetic, will
this impact male fertility or conception.

Thanks Julie

Julie,

Any change in a man's health can impact his ability to father a child. It takes approximately 2 - 3 months for the production and availability of mature sperm. Therefore, an individual’s health and well being the preceding months may determine fertility. Numerous medications also may impact both sperm quality and quantity. Although this is not a comprehensive list the following are known to impact male fertility: Aldomet, Labetalol, alcohol, tobacco, Tagamet, lead, marijuana as well as radiation or chemotherapy. Prolonged exposure to hot tubes or intense cycling may also have a negative effect. Hypertension and diabetes may also impact the ability to reproduce as well as the quality of the erection. If you spouse has any erectile dysfunction or difficulty with ejaculation, an evaluation by a urologist is in order. In addition, a semen analysis should be one of the first steps in a basic fertility evaluation.

 Good Luck,

 Dr. Bates
